AUGUST 2, 2022 – MAYO, YUKON: The Na-Cho Nyäk Dun Development Corporation (NNDDC) has entered into a 5-year agreement with Snowline Gold Corp (Snowline) to lease a 27-kilowatt portable solar generator system for Snowline’s exploration project in the Selwyn Basin. This project is located within the Traditional Territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun (FNNND). This investment will help reduce carbon emissions and provide economic benefits within the green economy. This solar generator, which was designed and built by Solvest Inc. and is one of the first of its kind in the Yukon, will be used to power Snowline’s off-grid 45-person "Forks” camp on its Rogue Project in the Eastern Yukon. Estimates provided by Solvest, based on data collected from Snowline’s 2021 field program, predict the new solar generator will have estimated total fuel savings per season of 12,572 litres of diesel and reduce the camp’s direct diesel consumption by up to 90% for the season. Not only does this project help to reduce direct consumption, but also reduces the indirect fuel consumption required to transport fuel to the site, which includes trucking fuel to Mayo and then to the site via airplane. This will have a net positive impact on the project from an environmental and financial perspective. “Investments such as this are examples of how Indigenous businesses are leading the way
in accelerating the green economy, and innovations such as this provide opportunities for
such entities to become increasingly engaged in the mineral resource sector. We see this
investment as just the first of many of its kind and we are working towards building a fleet
that can be deployed throughout the Traditional Territory.”
- Jani Djokic, CEO, NNDDC
The system consists of three main components: the power module, the battery module and the solar panel module. The size of the system was based on data collected during the 2021 exploration season. The system reduces the generator operating time and fuel consumption. Reduced operating time for the generator allows camp noise to be reduced, creating a better quality of life for employees due to the reduction of noise pollution. The reduction in sound is also expected to have a positive impact on the wildlife in the surrounding areas. Installation of the solar generator is complete, and the system is now fully operational, providing a majority of the camp’s power.
"This project is a tangible representation of how Snowline is realizing our Corporate Vision.
It increases efficiency while creating financial and environmental value. It improves our
employees' work environment, it is yet another partnership with the Na-Cho Nyäk Dun
Development Corporation, and it is being provided by Solvest, one of Yukon's most
innovative companies." - Steve Rennalls, Operations Manager, Snowline Gold Corp.
The project is supported by Northern REACHE (under Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs
Canada), which supports northern and Indigenous communities in their transition to renewable and
sustainable sources of energy, and the Innovative Renewable Energy Initiative (IREI, under Yukon
Development Corporation), which provides funding for small-scale, community-led renewable energy
projects.
