It is with enthusiasm, pride, and a dash of a “radical dude” that Na-Cho Nyäk Dun Development Corporation celebrates Sunrise Absorb becoming its own non-profit society. Sunrise Absorb has been an initiative years in the making, only made possible through dedicated community champions, and rich partnership with Carleton University.
Sunrise Absorb is a youth-led, community-based skateboard making club, run out of JV Clark School, championed by teacher and maker enthusiast, Brett Stauffer. For the past few years, NNDDC has dedicated our reinvestment strategy to initiatives like Sunrise Absorb. Its success and growth beyond NNDDC’s office is an indication that sustainable community reinvestment can have important lasting impact.
Earlier this season, the Sunrise Absorb program began its second year as an after school program at JV Clark school. In addition to many young makers returning, we’re proud to report that the program has welcomed even more participants. This will no doubt be a year of growth, learning, unbridled artistic expression, and cultural connection on their terms.
As Sunrise Absorb enters this exciting new chapter, NNDDC will continue to support the organization in a reduced capacity as it spends this year developing the systems to stand on its own. As always, Sunrise Absorb is looking for community champions to join as grown-up maker support and/or to sit on the board of directors. If you have an interest or capacity to join, please get in touch with Brett at sunriseabsorb@gmail.com
