Food Connectivity

Food sovereignty, security, and connectivity are priority areas of business for NNDDC. Through our foods and food practices we may be further connected to our language, culture, ancestors, land, and community, and be nourished in a good way.

On this page, we'll be telling the story of what we're doing, why we're doing it, and how you can get involved.

What is a Food Systems Manager in the context of NNDDC?

NNDDC's Food Systems Manager helps to gather, connect, and share information and ideas about the NND food economy. NNDDC is committed to Food Sovereignty and Security as a priority business focus area because food is tied to community well-being in multiple ways. Food systems refer to the multiple activities and relationships that go into producing, harvesting, processing, preparing, and sharing food, including the governance of food. Food systems research is a process of collecting and connecting information, it is a relational process – relationships are central to food systems research and development.

By taking an active economic role in the food sector, NNDDC can drive food sovereignty initiatives, enhance community food security, and sustain the food systems aligned with Na-Cho Nyäk Dun's cultural values and vision for self-determination.

Having control over our own food systems allows Na-Cho Nyäk Dun to produce culturally appropriate, nutritious, and desirable foods aligned with our traditional practices and values. This strengthens our connection to Northern Tutchone heritage and sustains our way of life. Owning the infrastructure like gardens, food processing facilities, and innovative technology such as hydroponic systems enables self-determination in food production tailored to community needs.

Project

Food Systems Mapping

NNDDC's Food Systems Manager is working to understand and map connections across the regional food ecosystem. This involves gathering insights from community members, exploring potential connections across the food system, and identifying opportunities to increase food sovereignty and security. The goal is to create a shared vision and strategic guide for NNDDC to work toward supporting resilient, community-driven food initiatives that preserve traditional practices, enhance accessibility, and foster economic opportunities.

Project

Food Innovation Hub

The Ihdzí’ Food Innovation Hub project is a communal commercial kitchen, network, and gathering space at the heart of the Mayo community. The hub is being co-designed to support local food producers, aspiring producers, programmers, and learners, and the availability of local, cultural, and nutritious food options and teachings. It will foster community food production and entrepreneurship by providing and facilitating access to infrastructure.

The Food Innovation Hub aims to facilitate access to shared infrastructure and resources for local food producers, programmers, aspiring entrepreneurs, and interested community members. The hub will support skill development, knowledge and resource sharing, capacity building, and community food connection through mentorship, workshops, and events. Key objectives include nurturing a community-centered food ecosystem, stimulating the local food economy, and increasing access to fresh, healthy, and cultural food options.

Definitions

Food Systems

Food systems encompass all the activities, resources, and people within a community or region involved in bringing food from the lands and waters to our plates. These are the multiple activities and relationships that go into producing, harvesting, processing, preparing, distributing, sharing, and consuming food. It includes traditional food practices like hunting, gathering, and cultivation, as well as commercial operations like farming, grocery stores, restaurants, and waste management. A community's food system is deeply connected to its governance, economy, culture, and most fundamentally, the land and ecosystems that sustain it.

Food Security

Food security means having reliable access to enough nutritious, safe, and appropriate food for an active and healthy life. It involves ensuring all community members can stably access, afford, and utilize food that aligns with their dietary needs, preferences, and traditions.

Food security is widely used from local to global scales, defined as the ability of people to access and afford sufficient food supplies to meet nutritional needs. Food security is linked with and shaped by factors such as socioeconomic equality, environmental conditions, and physical health.

Food Sovereignty

Food sovereignty is the ability of communities to govern and make decisions about their own food systems to meet holistic well-being. It involves peoples' right to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food systems. Food sovereignty is tied to NND's self-determination and stewardship over traditional lands, waters, and resources, as well as political, economic, and cultural practices and responsibilities.

It empowers people to control how food is produced, distributed, and consumed according to their values, cultures, and local environments. Food sovereignty advocates for the prioritization of local food practices, traditional knowledge, and self-determination over outside corporate control.
